Season 1, Episode 10: When & Why Self-Help Fails

In this, our first Sunday episode, your host, Michael Neeley will take you on a discovery of the reasons why your efforts at personal development (self-help) have fallen short or missed the mark.

While the self-improvement genre continues to grow by leaps and bounds, do you ever wonder why people keep devouring the material? Wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that if the books (or workshops or seminars) were working, that we wouldn’t ever need to buy another self-help book again?

YET, statistics have proven otherwise.

From my work in the development of my book, The Art of Forgetting, I have distilled the challenge down to three basic elements, which I share in this podcast episode.

Season 1, Episode 9: Guided Meditation #1 with Michael Neeley

Whether you are a regular practitioner or a beginner, the intention of this guided meditation is that you stoke the fire of your passion for the practice. If you’ve been meditating much in life, a lot of this may seem very basic; however, it is always important to remember the beauty of its simplicity. So, please consider this a refresher.

If you are a novice, it will all seem new to you. Please enter it with the understanding that this is not a normal guided meditation – because there is no such thing. A guided meditation can take on as many forms as the variety of a butterfly’s wings. Today, you will be guided and informed simultaneously. I hope to dispel some of the prevalent myths and misconceptions about meditation. And while there are many schools of thought on the topic, in all of my studies on both meditation and Buddhism, I have found the basic premises to be the most beneficial.

The Challenges of Letting Go

I love the fall season. It is nature’s way of letting go of that which no longer serves. The trees shed their leaves. The grass gives up its color. And nature itself seems to look inward to its roots. There is no struggle. It is full of ease.

We can learn a great deal from nature at this time of year. To trust that it is okay to let go. To know that what we need will come to us in time. To breathe deeply and slowly and look inward.

Yet sadly, we often end up like a dog with a bone, fighting tooth and nail to hang onto something. It might be your relationship or it might be your job. It could be your money or it could be your fame. These are the things that are usually very apparent. Everybody can see what you’re up to. Sometimes, you can even see it yourself.

However, we frequently (and often subconsciously) cling to something that can harm us much worse than the obvious. We just won’t let go of our notions, our beliefs, or our habits.

I’m not talking about ideals or faith, but about the stories that we make up and tell ourselves. Stories about ourselves, about our world, about the people in it. And much like a child that believes in both Santa Claus and the Boogie-Man, we take these made-up stories for cold hard fact.

Don’t Let Your Mistakes Undo You

We all make mistakes. Many of us own up to them. Some of us profit from them. And a few of us are even able to correct them. The key question here, is “What makes the difference?”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

“A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes,
smart enough to profit from them, and
strong enough to correct them.”

~ John C. Maxwell

It’s a given that you simply cannot make it through life without making mistakes. It would probably even be accurate to say that we can’t make it through a day without making mistakes. It happens. Not just for you or for me, but for all of us.

If you want to maximize the benefit from your mistakes (don’t we all?), here’s a good place to get started.

STEP 1: Spot it.

You’ve got to FIRST recognize that a mistake was made. You can’t own a mistake you didn’t know existed.

This is where you just have to trust your peers and tune into reality. With a little practice, you’ll be able to spot your mistakes within seconds. With a LOT of practice, you may even get to the point where you can stop that mistake just before you make it. A very Jedi move indeed.

But for now, let’s just recognize our mistake.
